Lack of advanced health care facilities in Mahabaleshwar Taluka and even in nearby Wai has been a major concern for the health sector in the area. After taking over the PHCs and RH in the taluka, its lack of referral facilities has been increasingly felt. Hence Red Cross decided to construct a super specialty hospital at Wai where Bel-Air has a 16 acre property. As a first step a building was designed with advanced facilities and 50 beds three years back. We had almost competed the civil work when the Covid pandemic struck. Then the work was stopped and we diverted our focus to Covid care. But due to the second surge of Covid even Wai Taluk is reeling under lack of proper hospital beds. Government has set up two make shift facilities which are only stop gap arrangements. There are some small private hospitals which do admit Covid patients. But they are not affordable for ordinary population. This has convinced us more sharply about the relevance of our Red Cross Hospital project at Wai which would be offering free or concessional treatment to the needy population in partnership with the Government. This may be also a very good preparation for a possible third wave.
